Westchase’s History

What is now Westchase was land under the family of Bob Smith, a Houston rancher and philanthropist. In 1969 Friendswood Development Company purchased a section of Smith’s land to form what is now Woodlake. In 1973 the Westchase Corporation purchased 760 acres of Smith family land. As development expanded, Chevron and Western Geophysical were some of the first companies to establish operations in Westchase. The section of Beltway 8 serving the area opened in 1988, increasing road access. The Westchase District began in 1995.

Westchase’s Economy

BMC Software is headquartered at 2101 CityWest Boulevard. In 1991 BMC announced plans to build a new headquarters complex, which it anticipated would cost between 60 and 65 million dollars. BMC planned to vacate two leased facilities in Sugar Land, Texas when its current headquarters, located on a 20-acre site purchased from Southwest Inc., opened; the land by itself costed over 8 million dollars. The 20 story, 120,000-square-foot tower was scheduled to begin construction in March or April 1992 and the facility was scheduled to open in late 1993. BMC temporarily subleased 90,316 square feet of space at the Permian Tower from Scurlock Permian Corporation until the headquarters was completed. BMC Software’s current headquarters was one of a few office buildings being built within a two year period prior to December 1992. BMC Software’s building was one of a few that opened within a two year period prior to December 1992.

West University Place’s History

The city was developed in 1917 by Ben Hooper, a former Tennessee governor. The name “West University Place” originated from its proximity to Rice Institute (now Rice University). The city incorporated in 1924 because Houston was reluctant to extend power lines that far from the city center. West University Place, unlike Houston Heights, did not consolidate into the City of Houston. In 1939, the municipality refused to consolidate, later adopting a formal city charter the following year. The city had around 15,000 residents in the 1960s and the 1970s. The city had 12,714 people in 1990.

West University Place’s Economy & Cityscape

AT&T operates a telephone exchange center at 4068 Bellaire Boulevard. The original housing stock of West University Place consisted of mid-20th century bungalows and cottages. Prior to 1992 the City of West University place liberalized its development rules, allowing for new houses to be built in the city. As lot sizes were typically about 50 feet by 120 feet, the houses constructed were Georgian houses described by Don Stowers of the Houston Post as “lot hugging.” Because nearby Bellaire had larger, more inexpensive lots, many area home seekers began to consider Bellaire. In a 15-year period ending in 2002 around half of the existing houses in West University Place were torn down and replaced with newer houses.

Waco’s History

Named after the area’s first inhabitants, the Huaco Indians, Waco began as a village which didn’t take shape until 1849, when surveyor George B. Erath laid out its first streets. In 1856, Waco became incorporated as a city, and by the 1870s became a hub of commerce for the state of Texas with the arrival of several railroad lines. In 1886, Baylor University relocated to the city from Independence, Texas, merging with Waco University. By the turn of the century, Waco had established itself as one of the world’s leading producers of cotton. In more recent times, Waco made the news as the site of a 1993 shoot-out claiming the lives of six members of the Davidian cult and four agents of the United States Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). A 51-day standoff ensued, culminating in a fire which destroyed the Davidian compound located in Mt. Carmel, near Waco.

Waco’s Economy

Downtown Waco is small compared to many other Texas cities, such as Houston or Dallas, or even San Antonio, Fort Worth, El Paso or Austin. However, each day roughly 17,000 people commute to and from work in downtown. Downtown Waco was built around the Waco Suspension Bridge, which was a crucial crossing of the Brazos River. In May 1953, the worst tornado in Texas history struck downtown Waco killing 114, and injuring hundreds. It caused millions of dollars in damage, and dented Waco’s economy for years after. Downtown Waco is home to the ALICO building, which was completed in 1910, and was once the tallest structure in the Southwest. Downtown Waco is now the location of the famous Dr Pepper Museum, where Dr Pepper was invented; it is also the location of the McLennan County Courthouse.

Victoria’s History

The first Europeans to settle in Victoria County were French, led by Rene Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle. Arriving in 1685, La Salle and his colonists established a settlement on the west bank of the Garcitas Creek. La Salle never gave a name to this settlement; it is known today as Fort St. Louis. Because of personal intrigue, treacherous, unpredictable and untrustworthy Karankawa Indians, lack of fresh water and food, and various diseases, La Salle’s colony came to a tragic end in 1688.

Victoria’s Economy

Victoria’s economy is a mix of education, health, retail, agriculture, and industry. Its access to major highways, the Victoria Regional Airport, railway terminals, the shallow draft Port of Victoria, and the deep water Port of Port Lavaca-Point Comfort help to sustain a healthy environment for business. Major industrial employers in the region include Formosa Plastic, the Inteplast Group, Dow, Invista, and Alcoa. Caterpillar Industries recently announced that it would build a manufacturing facility in Victoria that will employ approximately 500 people when it begins production in mid 2012.

Travis County’s History

Travis County is a county located in south central Texas astride the Balcones Fault, the boundary between the Edwards Plateau to the west and the Blackland Prairie to the east. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. In the year 2009, the population was 1,026,158; the county has gained more than 400,000 residents since 1990. Its county seat is Austin, the capital of Texas. The county is named in honor of William Barret Travis, the commander of the Republic of Texas forces at the Battle of the Alamo.

Travis County’s Economy

Travis County, along with other Texas counties, has one of the nation’s highest property tax rates. In 2007, the county was ranked 37th in the nation for property taxes as percentage of the homes value on owner occupied housing. The list only includes counties with a population over 65,000 for accuracy. Travis County also ranked in the top 100 for amount of property taxes paid and for percentage of taxes of income. Part of this is due to the complex Robin Hood plan school financing law that exists in Texas.

Tomball’s History

Settlement began in the Tomball area in the early 19th century, where immigrants found an open, fertile land that received adequate rainfall—perfect conditions for farming and raising cattle. However, it was not until 1906 that the area began to boom. Tomball, which people began to call “a floating island of oil,” was immediately flooded with over two dozen oil companies, which drew thousands of workers and boosted the economy like never before. One major player, the Humble Oil Company, struck a deal with the town through which they would provide gas free of charge to the residents in exchange for rights to drill on the land, this agreement lasted until 1988 when the reservoirs began to be depleted.

Tomball’s Economy

The median income for a household in the city was $37,787, and the median income for a family was $45,764. Males had a median income of $38,059 versus $26,799 for females. The per capita income for the city was $20,331. About 4.5% of families and 7.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.3% of those under age 18 and 17.6% of those age 65 or over.

The Galleria’s History

The Galleria was developed by Gerald D. Hines, opening on November 16, 1970. The new shopping center, anchored by Neiman Marcus, was modeled after the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Milan, borrowing, as its most distinctive architectural feature, a glazed barrel vault spanning the central axis of the mall. When it opened the mall had 600,000 ft² (56,000 m²) of retail space. The original skylights — which graced among other things a large, floor-level, ice rink – had three hanging chandeliers along with the incorporation of the Houston Oaks Hotel (now The Westin Oaks Houston).

The Galleria’s Economy

The Galleria is located in Uptown Houston, Texas, the 17th largest business district in the United States, and has 23,600,000 square feet of office space, representing 11% of all of Houston’s office space and 22% of Houston’s Class A office space. Major employers include 3D/International, Air Liquide America, AON Risk Services of Texas, Inc., Apache Corporation, BHP Billiton, Bechtel Corporation, Beirne, Maynard & Parsons, LLP, Bindview Corporation, CB Richard Ellis, Clear Channel, Dow Chemical, Duke Energy, General Electric, Hines, Litton Loan Servicing, Marathon Oil Corporation, MWH Americas, Inc., Net IQ Corporation, Nextira One, LLC, Panhandle Pipeline Co., Stewart Title Guaranty Company, Telecheck International, Inc., GDF Suez Energy Resources NA, and Williams Companies. Around 2,000 companies maintain operations in Uptown.

Sugar Land’s History

Sugar Land has a heritage tracing its roots back to the original Mexican land grant to Stephen F. Austin. One of the first settlers of the land, Samuel M. Williams, called this land “Oakland Plantation” because there were many different varieties of oaks on the land, such as Willow Oak, Post Oak, Water Oak, Southern red oak, and Live Oak. Williams’ brother, Nathaniel, purchased the land in 1838. They operated the plantation by growing cotton, corn, and sugarcane. During these early years, the area that is now Sugar Land was the center of social life along the Brazos River. In 1853, Benjamin Terry and William J. Kyle purchased the Oakland Plantation from the S. M. Williams family. Terry is known for organizing Terry’s Texas Rangers during the Civil War and for naming the town. Upon the deaths of Terry and Kyle, Colonel E. H. Cunningham bought the 12,500 acre plantation soon after the Civil War and developed the town around his sugar refining plant around 1879.

Sugar Land’s Economy

Sugar Land hosts its economy through diversification, corporate vitality, and quality of life and was ranked as one of the “Top Cities in Texas” for business relocation and expansion by both Outlook Magazine and Texas Business. Industries calling Sugar Land home are as diverse as its resident population. Sugar Land is home to the headquarters of the Imperial Sugar Company. It also served as the home of the company’s main (and sole) refinery and distribution center. The refinery and distribution center have been put out of operation since 2003.
